I didn't realize those were side effects of statins. That makes sense though - my Mom has been experiencing them all for quite some time. My parents were both on med for cholesterol and high blood pressure. Dad lost weight and was able to get off them a while back. Mom's new doctor took her off the meds just recently because she said the side effects were worse than the problems they were supposedly correcting, plus the meds were preventing her from absorbing certain nutrients and she was deficient.

I am going to pray for y'all. Having a sick parent is no fun at all and in fact, is much more difficult (and often quite frustrating) than I could ever have imagined. The Book Lady Onlinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09798717435700733139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375464991388690959.post-37087769384920275932011-05-18T14:20:27.483-05:002011-05-18T14:20:27.483-05:00Oh, and I've noticed serious balance problems ...Oh, and I've noticed serious balance problems with my dad who seems to be effected by statins much more than my mom. His skin is always bruised, wounds take forever to heal, and he literally has no balance, constantly tripping or almost falling. This causes immediate concern because with losing cell regeneration, if he falls and breaks a bone, it will take forever to heal because of the statins.Motherhenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00847866120253288588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375464991388690959.post-78664762247027364292011-05-18T14:18:56.241-05:002011-05-18T14:18:56.241-05:00Lori, I'm glad to hear that your mom is not lo...Lori, I'm glad to hear that your mom is not losing weight and her digestive problems are improving.

I know that my parents are going to be faced with extreme health issues in the near future. Besides peanut butter, it is the thing I am stocking up on most. Ha, ha.

I love your idea to plant sunflowers for your chickens. I bet that field will be beautiful when in bloom!! A neighboring farm planted about a half acre of sunflowers last year and it was such a treat to look at when in bloom. Beautiful and functional. Plus your chickens will love their yummy organically grown seeds.

I wish I were less worried about things, but I think I may be even more worried now than I was a few weeks ago. After being reminded just how quickly a disaster can hit (Japan & NJ), I am actually feeling an even greater urgency. I guess being from a hurricane prone area helps us to really be able to understand what an emergency can do to logistics and food supplies at stores. I think I may need to stop watching the news and take Drudge Report off my twitter feed, lol.

I think hubby may be starting to understand my concern over grocery prices. Yesterday, he stopped on his way home from town to pick up milk and was shocked when it was $4.65 for a gallon!! Yikes!

Cold frames sound like a fun summer project. ...Yum, I love banana chips, they are so addictive.

I've calmed down a bit since the last time I commented, but since tracking grocery costs at the beginning of Feb, I'm seeing the definete rise. And horror of horrors, Starbucks coffee went up LOL.

I like you idea of sprouting beans for your chickens. I planted an abandoned lot right next to our place in sunflowers Tuesday. We don't mow this plot, so I figured it was better to plant it with sunflowers than just be weedy and ugly. When the flowers form their seed heads, I'm giving those to the hens and replanting a second time. I'm going to do this all summer, and possibly next year as well.

I tried starting some warm weather seeds under glass in my garden. This is NOT working as well as I had hoped and I'm thinking I may have to chalk it up as a failure. I want to make some movable cold frames. This will be my mid-summer inside project.

I don't understand why our men are not as urgent about things as we are, but maybe that's all just a face? Maybe they are trying to remain calm to keep the rest of the family calm?Motherhenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00847866120253288588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375464991388690959.post-4766715481700320942011-03-04T16:50:06.345-06:002011-03-04T16:50:06.345-06:00Yes, I believe how much you depend on your big boy...Yes, I believe how much you depend on your big boys. I am lost without my big kids too! You did get a lot done though. Spring still hasn't arrived here, so we are not getting much done outside. Your arrangement with your parents sounds like a good one - I am guessing they have a lot more sunlight than you. :)Alea Milhamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15549333388945700712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375464991388690959.post-44058740773003885802011-02-25T15:43:08.766-06:002011-02-25T15:43:08.766-06:00Paula, I think I should avoid that blog,or I might...Paula, I think I should avoid that blog,or I might really frighten myself, lol.

My husband is a lot like yours; he thinks things will be just fine, if more expensive. He also thinks things will be fixed once the right people are elected. I am doubtful that anything can make a real difference. I feel like we are headed for hard times, no matter what anyone "does".

While I am glad that he and I are not both freaked out, I do wish we were a little more in agreement about the future. I think it would make things easier, since right now, I really feel the need to get goats soon, and he wants to wait a few years. I've also thought about a pig, especially since we have so many acres of woods with lots of oaks, but again, I don't see that happening any time soon.

I see that you and I have similar thoughts about things, though I have a lot farther to go than you. I am so impressed with all you have accomplished. I am not buying any gold right now, but instead putting our surplus into dry goods for the pantry. We have lots of water sources on our property but I would really like rain barrels as well, for watering the garden and animals.

I am also looking into "renting" some land for a big garden. A side benefit of this search is that I am getting to know our neighbors and building community which I think will be increasingly important as prices continue to rise. I could use my parent's land, but it is in another state, which would make caring for it and putting up the harvest more difficult. In the mean time, I am hoping that clearing out the smaller trees will let in more light and maybe allow for more gardening on our property. I am also looking in to container gardening for the smaller areas near the house that get some sunlight.

Here's to working our plans :)The Book Lady Onlinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09798717435700733139noreply@blogger.com
